NYC theatrical pro and L.A. celebrity pianist collaborate with new singing masterclass-showcase
Hollywood native returns to open new voice studio for amateur to professional singers and launches masterclass-showcase with long-time celebrity music director-pianist

November 12, 2020, Los Angeles. Cherilyn Bacon, accomplished actress, singer, voice teacher and producer of Backstage’s top-rated musical theatre summer program at Broadway’s Circle in the Square Theatre, is opening a voice studio and masterclass-showcase program located at 4963 Topanga Canyon Blvd, Woodland Hills.  She is seeking private students, amateur to professional, all ages for her Pro-Track and Discovery Track programs. Winter Session begins November 16, 2020-March 6, 2021.  The 5-week, 30-hour “Beyond Singing Technique Masterclass-Showcase” program with pianist-coach Jeff Urband begins January 5-February 4, 2021.

“I’m delighted to team up with Jeff, who has had an extraordinary 40 years as musical director and accompanist for many recording and Broadway performers including John Raitt, Bonny Raitt, Constance Towers, Anna-Maria Alberghetti, Joanna Gleason, Anne Runolfsson, Miss America, Miss California and more.”

Throughout Ms. Bacon’s 30+ year teaching career, she has also spent 40+ years as a working actor-singer, performing leading and supporting roles Off-Broadway, in regional and local theatre, on national and international tours, TV, concerts, commercials, cabaret and voice-overs.  She has appeared with Hollywood and Broadway celebrities Joel Grey, Alexis Smith, Ron Perlman, Kelly Bishop, Randy Graff, John LaMotta, Janna Robbins, J.P. Dougherty, Merlin Olsen and Victoria Principal.

For her New York City program, she assembled a stellar advisory board including Broadway icons: musical director Peter Howard; Theatre Wing President Sean Hartley; composer-lyricist Stephen Flaherty; musical director Jack Lee, actor-producer Harvey Keitel and former Madison Square Garden President David Checketts.

Ms. Bacon holds a BFA in theatre (Brigham Young University), was the recipient of the prestigious Mary Martin Scholarship at Northwood University (Business of Musical Theatre) and is a member of NATS, SAG-AFTRA and AEA.  She has received highest student ratings as adjunct faculty (BYU) and at the nationally ranked Orange County School of the Arts, where she trained students performing on Broadway.  She currently teaches commercial music and musical theatre students at the California School of the Arts.

Ms. Bacon is listed among the 20 Best Voice Teachers in Los Angeles. Her approach to song interpretation and audition-performance is inspired by the late David Craig, as taught by his protégé and her mentor Sara Louise Lazarus.  “Most singers say their goal at an audition is to get hired or to show talent and skill.  That’s just not so,” Ms. Bacon said.  “My Beyond Singing Technique creates a spectacularly unforgettable performance, whether in audition or on stage.”

The private studio Winter Session offers 13 weekly lessons, three master classes, and a Cabaret Show at Miceli’s Pizza Pasta Grille in Universal City, where Mr. Urband contracts the singing waiters for which Miceli’s is known.  Students may choose between virtual, hybrid or on site (Covid-compliant).

The Beyond Singing Technique Masterclass-Showcase offers one-on-one coaching in song interpretation and audition techniques and is limited to 12 people. Ms. Bacon and Mr. Urband, will blend their strengths to take the singer from ordinary to extraordinary culminating in an agent-casting director showcase critique. “Whether your goal is AGT, The Voice, Broadway, the recording studio, film voice over, or your own show, this is your masterclass,” Ms. Bacon said.

Students and parents alike have praised her work as “totally astounding, beyond magnificent.  Ms. Bacon is an incredible inspiration and mentor.  She has left a lasting impression, incredible professionalism, and quality performances that reflect her skill, wisdom and experience.”

Singer Julia Berumen, whose daughter Reagan Pearson studies privately and at CSArts with Ms. Bacon, said, “She’s a fantastic coach who takes her work seriously, but with a kind heart.  She provides positive and motivational feedback, but most of all she is accurate and precise.  I have seen consistent improvement in Reagan’s abilities.  She truly is an expert in her field.”

Ms. Bacon responded, “I’m grateful for the students I’ve taught.  They have enriched my life and made me a better teacher.  Now I’ve come full circle. I was born and raised in Hollywood, where I credit Margaret Romaine, a marvelous Metropolitan Opera singer, for turning a shy girl into a confident woman.  I’m back home in the world’s music epicenter and thrilled to be where I can give back and do what I love: take singers from good to great and watch them thrive.”
